René is a character that appears in the Rainbow Six novel. A former member of Action Directe, he was the leader of a terrorist plot to get Carlos The Jackal released from prison by taking children hostage at World Park in Spain.

Biography

René was a member of the Action Directe terrorist group. During his time with the group, René conducted several assasinations. He accomplished them on crowded streets by walking up to his targets, firing a suppressed pistol, and walking away before anyone could notice what he had done. René would then admire his work by watching news reports of his actions. Following the dissolution of Action Directe by the French police in 1987, René was among several members that went into hiding.

Rainbow Six

In 1999, René and other former members of Action Directe were contacted by Carlos The Jackal's lawyer about his request to be released. René and his associates enacted a plan to force the French government to release Carlos by taking the children of Thompson CSF employees hostage while at World Park. After checking into one of the park's surrounding hotels, René had Andre and Esteban gather information about the park by applying for jobs as a park security guard and a balloon seller. Two weeks later on Apil 2nd, René and his associates launched their attack and took employees of Thompson CSF and their families hostage. René then separated thirty-three of the employee's children as well as two terminally ill children from their families and corralled them into the park's command center within a replica medieval castle.

With the area locked down, René called the park's Operations Director Mike Dennis and requested to speak with the police to make his demands. Under the alias of "One", René spoke with Captain Dario Gassman of the Guardia Civil and demanded that he establish a line with the French embassy as none of the hostages were citizens of Spain. Gassman protested, stating that while that may be true, the children were still his responsibility. Ignoring Gassman's remark, René once again demanded that he contact the French embassy so that he could relay his demands.

René was later contacted by the French ambassador and gave him his demands to release Carlos the Jackal as well as other members of Action Directe from prison. René then told the ambassador that once his associates were released and transported to their location at World Park, all of them would board an aircraft that would fly them to a destination of his choosing. After ending his call with the ambassador, René reassured Esteban and said that for now they would allow the French Government to take their time while they consolidated their position. Dario Gassman later called René to inform him that the French Government had not gotten back to him yet. René explained to Gassman that he had not given a deadline as a show of goodwill. He then said that he would force Paris to respect their resolve if needed, implying that he would kill hostages if Gassman did not make that clear to them.

Following Rainbow's arrival at the park, John Clark had the park engineer cut the power to the castle. A few seconds later, René contacted the park's control room and spoke with Rainbow's negotiator, Paul Bellow. Ignoring Bellows attempt to profile him, René demanded that the power be turned on immediately or else he would kill a child. After cutting the line, René asked Andre to select a child to execute. Without hesitation, Andre choose a wheelchair bound Anna Groot as his victim and executed her. This prompted Clark to order his men to stand down and have the power to the castle restored. Esteban later noted Daniel Malloy's Night Hawk circling the park. As a result, René posted José on the castle roof to keep watch. He then told Andre and Esteban to keep an eye on the police who were slowly approaching the castle.

A few hours later, René grew impatient and called Bellow to tell him that they would start killing hostages every hour at 2200 unless their demands were met. As the French Minister outright refused to release Carlos no matter the cost, John Clark had Bellow claim to René that Carlos and six others would soon be released and would arrive at the park at approximately 2240. This news pleased René who allowed the slight deviation of his original deadline. René then instructed Bellow to have a bus take them to the airport after Carlos and the others arrived at the park. According to René, no more children would be harmed should everything go according to plan. After the call, René informed his associates of the news and proceeded to celebrate with them. This, however, is exactly what Clark had intended as it distracted the terrorists and gave Rainbow more time to plan their assault. René later called back to ask about the status of the aircraft. Bellow informed him that the plane was about an hour and ten minutes out from the park. This René to instruct Bellow to have the bus arrive to pick them up exactly forty minutes before the plane's arrival. Bellow agreed to his request and stated that the bus would be there in fifteen minutes. Once the call ended, René ordered Andre to survey the courtyard while they waited for the bus to arrive.

John Clark initiated the rescue operation five minutes later. Chavez and the rest of Team 2 boarded Malloy's Night Hawk while Peter Covington entered the castle from the underground access. Once the Night Hawk was in place over the castle, Homer Johnston eliminated José with his sniper rifle, allowing Team 2 to descend onto the roof. After Team 2 rappelled down to the control room windows, Clark ordered the park engineer to once again kill the lights. René was in the process of calling about the lights when Team 2 breached through the windows. In an instant, Mike Pierce killed René by shooting him in the head before he could retaliate. Not long after, the other seven terrorists that remained in the control room were neutralized. Andre was the last man standing but was soon fatally wounded by Homer Johnston.
