The Mi-80 Tarantula is the heavy lift helicopter of the Russian Federation.
Overview
The Tarantula is the largest single-rotor helicopter in use in the year 2020. Based on a design that first appeared in the 1980's, this new version is able to carry more than double the weight of its predecessor and is used by the SBG to deliver heavy equipment and armour to hot zones over short distances.[1]
Callsigns
Tarantulas have callsigns when deploying vehicles. Their callsigns refer to heavy transport vehicles or engines:
- Engine
- Diesel
- Flatbed
- Tanker
- Caboose
- Sleeper

Trivia
- The earlier design is likely the Mi-26, which was a heavy lift helicopter that went into production in the 1980's and is the largest helicopter ever put into mass production.
- The "Mi" designation would suggest the Mi-80 was designed by the Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant.
- It's not exactly clear why anyone would try to arm such a cumbersome craft (i.e. the nose gun), and equip it with such an abnormal cockpit design - the single forward "bubble" is for the gunner (if it is following the same logic as the Mi-24 Hind), while the two upper "bubbles" are for pilots.
