Biography

Hector Guzman was born in Guatemala to an Indian mother and a father with mixed Spanish and German heritage. During his childhood, Guzman suffered from a virulent skin condition that left his face badly pockmarked with divots and irregular scars. He went on to join the Guatemalan Army at the first opportunity to escape the poverty of subsistence farming in the highlands. Guzman stood out for his intelligence and physical skills as well as his capacity for violence. This allowed him to be immediately accepted into the Guatemalan Special Forces, the Kaibiles. As part of his initiation, he not only raised and killed a puppy but also skinned, roasted, and ate it.

Guzman proved himself daily to his superiors and was eager to carry out ethically questionable orders against the cartel. This led him to rise through the ranks and caused his unit to be chosen to fight in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Guzman's men excelled in their missions but drew the ire of the international rights groups, the Palacio Verde, and the Guatemalan White House. Guzman was ordered to punish the men involved in these human rights violations but he refused out of loyalty to them. This led to his forced separation from the military and enter the private sector as a mercenary. His devotion to his men also led twenty of his best men to join him in the private sector. It also enabled him to hire over seventy more men, including Bykov and Rijk van Delden.

Trivia
