6: Siege - The Board Game is a board game based on Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege. Produced in collaboration between Mythic Games and Ubisoft Entertainment, the game originally started as a fan-made project. A successful Kickstarter campaign for the game started on June 22, 2021 and the game was later released in June 2022.

Overview

The board game can be played with with 2-4 players on two teams: Attackers and Defenders. Defenders must fortify their defenses on the board while Attackers are tasked with breaching them. The game is won by either eliminating all enemy Operators or by completing all mission objectives within the allotted time. Available mission types are Control, Bomb, and Hostage.

Games are played over five rounds, each divided over five phases: Attackers 1st Activation Phase, Defenders 1st Activation Phase, Attackers 2nd Activation Phase, Defenders 2nd Activation Phase, and End of Round.

The game uses the same maps and Operators from the video game which are represented by the board itself and physical figurine standees for Operators. Each Operator has an Operator Profile card which shows their name, art, weapon ranges and hit dice, special gadget description, as well as run, destroy, and stamina values.

Players must first set up the game's board which is a map layout view of one of the video game maps. Next, a phone with the board game's app open is placed beside the board along with line-of-sight rulers and dice. Tokens, markers, and overlays are also placed beside the board. The Round tracker token is then placed on the corresponding zero circle on the left side of the board. Next place components as shown in the mission guide. Components include objective tokens, Barricades, Cameras, etc. Afterwards, each team must select five Operators and may only choose Operators who align with their team (ex Attackers may only choose Attacking Operators). Once chosen, take the Operator profile card for each Operator and place a activation token on each of them. Each player then takes a tactical inventory board and takes their own re-roll token, overwatch markers, tokens, and standees. Attackers also gain three charge cubes and a Drone token and place them on the tactical inventory card. Each side then takes their charge cubes to secretly select five gadgets on the inventory card. Once chosen, both sides will similtaneously reveal their gadget choices to one another. Finally, players take the charge cubes for each of their Operators and components for their selected gadgets.

On the 6: Siege app, players must then select the game speed. Players have the option to chose different times from one another.

  • Initiation - 30 Minute Deployment, 2 minutes per Operator
  • Calm - 15 Minute Deployment, 1 minute 30 seconds per Operator
  • Standard - 15 Minute Deployment, 1 minute per Operator
  • Extreme - 10 Minute Deployment, 50 seconds per Operator

The Defenders must then place their Operators and gadgets on the board within the building. Defending Operators are first represented by two hidden Operator tokens and then standees once revealed.

Gameplay

Development

The game started as a project by Spanish game designer, Carlos Gomez Quintana. After two years, he had developed a version that he had felt captivated the gameplay and feeling of playing the video game. Carlos contacted Ubisoft and convinced them to approve an official version of the game. He then contacted several developers he knew at Mythic Games and conducted tests of the game with them at their Newscastle and Paris offices.

Mythic Games then negotiated with Ubisoft about a licensing deal for the game and signed an agreement. Afterwards, Mythic Games South spent the several months polishing the game with game developers Marc Lagroy and JB Gaillet assigned to the project full time. For 18 months, they led a small team and continued to polish the game to make it "as fluid as possible".

Once development was complete, the developer launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund the game in 2021. With a goal of $100,000 USD, the campaign earned approximately $1.5 million USD by summer 2022 with over ten thousand backers. This successful campaign led to the game's release in June 2022.[1][2]
