Talk:AK-74U

The AKS-74 is chambered for the 5.45x39mm round, which is the same 7.62x39mm in the AK-47 but necked down to accept the smaller bullet. It is NOT a high-powered rifle round. "Trades accuracy for more power" is an incorrect statement. More power than what? The AKS-74u is a carbine version of the AK-47, with a shorter barrel and stock; much like the U.S. M-4 is a carbine version of the M-16. Because of the shorter barrel, it has less accuracy and LESS power(muzzle energy). -Grimace427 19:43, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

the round itself was designed of the spetznaz and it explodes after entering the bodyDerekproxy 21:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

The round was designed to increase muzzle velocity over the 7.62, thus increasing accuracy. The projectile is very long compared to the 5.56, with a hollow cavity in the tip. This hollow space deforms and induces yaw when the bullet enters soft tissue. However after many tests on geletin targets(and even live pigs!), the round did not reliably fragment unlike the NATO 5.56 round. It DOES NOT EXPLODE. Small high-velocity rounds like the 5.56 fragment when they hit soft tissue(and especially water). This is to minimize over-penetration of the target. Expanding projectiles were banned in warfare after the Hague convention. -Grimace427 23:36, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
