Noah Breckebridge is a character that appears in the book Patriot Games.

Background

Breckenridge was born in Mississippi, and had a 28 year career in the Marine Corps by Patriot Games.

He begun his Marine career as an ordinary rifleman, ending up serving as a sniper in 1st Force Recon during the Vietnam War. He had been both a Sea Marine and an Embassy Marine, taught marksmanship at the sniper school, been a drill instructor as Parris Island and an officer instructor at Quantico. He was the divisional Sergeant Major at Camp LeJeune when the Marine detail at the Annapolis Naval Academy was augmented due to security breaches, and transferred over there as it's second in command, serving as Captain Perry's NCO. He had been everywhere a Marine could go, and done everything a Marine could do. Every year for the past 5 years, he went to the national marksman championships in Camp Perry, Ohio.

While Breckenridge was only the second in command, the Captain in charge let him run everything for him. He also moonlighted as an instructor for the Annapolis City Police, part of which was teaching a firearms safety class for women.

History

Patriot Games

After Sean Miller was freed from prison, and being warned by an FBI agent, Robby Jackson took Jack Ryan, Sr. to meet Breckenridge. He advised him to change his driving habits, a burglar alarm, and practice shooting with him every day. He personally selected a Browning Hi-Power for Ryan to use. He also arranged for Ryan to recieve some experimental flechette rounds the Marine Corps were developing at Quantico for his shotgun.

During the ULA attack on Cathy Ryan, a ULA gunman also attempted to attack Jack Ryan as he was leaving his office. However, he lingered outside the Academy too long due to Jack staying in to do paperwork, and Breckenridge confronted him and called the police when he tried to shoot the pair, as technically they had no legal jurisdiction outside the Academy.

Later the next year after escaping from the ULA attack on his house, Jack Ryan, Robby Jackson, and the Prince of Wales met back up with Breckenridge at the Academy and together with the Marine guard force fought off an attack from a pursuing boat, causing the ULA to flee. Breckenridge, Ryan, the Prince, and some of the Marines took a Patrol Boat in the harbor and chased after them, catching up with the ULA when they docked with their cargo ship.

Breckenridge shot one terrorist dead when they resisted arrest, but later persuaded Jack Ryan not to execute Sean Miller when he had his pistol in Sean's mouth, telling Jack he was not a murderer.

He was rumored to complete his 30-year tour of duty as Sergeant Major of the Corps, with an office adjoining the Commandant.

Personality

Physical Description

Breckenridge was a 6`3``, 200-pound male, the only fat on his body being in what he ate for lunch. His shoes were so shiny that one could only determine with difficulty they were actually black, his brass shone like stainless steel, and his hair was cut so close that if any gray were in there, the casual observer could never have seen it.

Decorations

He had 2 even rows of decorations on his uniform, top among them a Navy Cross he earned as a sniper in Vietnam. Beneath his ribbons he had several marksmanship medals, the least of which was a "Master" rating. He won 2 President's Cups at the national championship in Camp Perry, Ohio for his mastery of the .45 Colt.

Trivia

  • It is implied, but not outright stated, that the terrorist Breckenridge shot was in fact Kevin O'Donnell, leader of the ULA, as Kevin was last seen in the group of terrorists on the boat, but is mysteriously never mentioned again after the failed attack on the Academy. All further mentions of the ULA present Sean Miller as the highest ranking man captured, and there are no chances for any of the ULA members to escape.
  • Breckenridge is a smoker.
