Dr. Cathy Muller is a character that appears in the film, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.

Biography

In 2003, Cathy Muller was a third year medical student at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. It was at that time that she helped a Marine named Jack Ryan learn to walk again after he suffered a severe spinal injury from a helicopter crash in Afghanistan. After Ryan attended rehab for nearly a year, Cathy agreed to go to dinner with him once he was fully discharged from rehab. The pair later entered a romantic relationship soon after.

By 2010, Cathy had achieved her doctorate and had become engaged with Ryan. She was unaware of Ryan's secret employment at the CIA as agency protocol had prevented him from revealing this to her since they were not married. Cathy began to suspect that Ryan was having an affair due to his behavior which was further reinforced when she found a movie stamp in his pocket. When Cathy confronted Ryan about her suspicions, he denied them and promised to meet her in Paris following a business trip to Moscow. A few days later, however, Ryan told her that he wouldn't be able to make it to Paris.

Disappointed, Cathy sought to show Ryan how much she loved him by surprising him at his hotel room in Moscow. Finding Ryan's gun in his bedroom end table, Cathy confront him. Unable to hid his employment with the CIA any longer, Ryan breaks protocol and tells her the truth. Cathy is relieved to hear this but is still agitated that he had kept this from her for the past three years. Shortly after, Thomas Harper joins them and Cathy is filled on on Viktor Cherevin's plan to cripple the world economy following a staged terrorist attack. Harper then improvises and instructs Cathy to attend Ryan's dinner with Cherevin so as to not arouse suspicion with Cherevin, despite Ryan's protests.

Ryan and Muller meet Cherevin at an upscale restaurant across the street from Cherevin's office. Over dinner, Ryan causes a scene and purposely insults Muller. Excusing himself, he gains access to Cherevin's office while Cathy distracts Cherevin. After obtaining a copy of Cherevin's harddrive, Ryan manages to narrowly escape Cherevin's security detail, reunite with Cathy, and return to Harper. Ryan reveals that the terrorist attack is set to take place the next day somewhere in the United States and that once done, Cherevin will collapse the global economy. Before they can act further, however, their hideout is attacked by Cherevin and his men, resulting in Cathy being taken hostage. Following a short car chase through the streets of Moscow, Ryan manages to rescue Cathy and incapacitate Cherevin.

Aboard the flight back to the United States, they learn that Cherevin's son, Aleksandr Borovsky, will be performing the terrorist attack somewhere on Wall Street. After arriving back in New York City, Cathy asks to be taken to the hospital she works at in order to treat any casualties caused by the attack. After Ryan manages to stop Borovsky from detonating a bomb underneath Wall Street, Cathy meets him at the emergency room of her hospital and they embrace.
