Dr. Cathy Mueller is a character that appears in the film, The Sum of All Fears. She is the fiancé of Jack Ryan.

Biography

In 2002, Cathy worked as a Doctor at Baltimore Memorial Hospital. She eventually met Jack Ryan and the two started to date. After three dates, Cathy had learned that Ryan was a former Marine and was led to believe that he was a historian. The pair had also started to live together though Cathy felt that Ryan had trouble committing to the relationship. She also frequently spoke about Ryan to her friend and coworker Rita Russell.

In September 2002, Ryan was called into work and made dinner plans with Cathy before leaving. Later that night, however, Ryan called Cathy from an airplane to cancel the date. After Cathy asked Ryan where he was going, Ryan told her that he was not allowed to tell her. He then relented and explained that he worked for the CIA and that the DCI had requested that he accompany him to Moscow, Russia to inspect a nuclear weapons facility. Unconvinced, Cathy hung up on Ryan, aware that he had actually been telling the truth.

Ryan later made it up to Cathy by taking her to the White House Correspondents dinner by using John Clark's tickets. While President J. Robert Fowler spoke, Cathy told Ryan that she had booked them a room at the hotel for the night. Unfortunately, Ryan and other government officials were called away after they received news of the Russian Government launching a chemical attack on Grozny, the capital of Chechnya. Days later, Cathy was relaxing at home with Ryan when he received a phone call and had to briefly leave. Cathy then watched Ryan go outside and get into a car to speak with William Cabot before he returned.

A few weeks later, Cathy was on shift at the hospital when a nuclear bomb had detonated in Baltimore. The hospital was far enough away from ground zero that it only suffered damage from the initial shockwave, injuring Cathy and the other staff. Despite this, Cathy worked tirelessly to treat the wounded. Hours later, Ryan found Cathy at the hospital and embraced her. With the threat of nuclear war between the United States and Russia now over, Cathy accepted Ryan's proposal to marry him. Later that day, Cathy and Ryan had a picnic in Lafayette Park and listened to Fowler and Alexander Nemerov's joint speeches. They were then approached by Anatoly Grushkov who revealed himself to be Spinnaker, the anonymous source within the Russian Government. Grushkov surprised Ryan by handing Cathy a present for their engagement, which they had not told anyone about yet. Ryan asks him how he could of known but is only met with a smile from Grushkov who walks away.
