G. Dennis Bunker is a character that appears in the novel, The Sum of All Fears. In 1991, he was the U.S. Secretary of Defense under President Robert Fowler.

Biography

Dennis Bunker is a former Captain of the United States Air Force who served as a pilot during the Vietnam War. Bunker flew over a hundred F-105 combat missions, earning three Distinguished Crosses during the bombing of Hanoi. After separating from the military, he founded a large buisness conglomerate in Southern California and became the owner of the San Diego Chargers.

Bunker was later appointed to be the U.S. Secretary of Defense by President Robert Fowler due to his brilliant grasp of military tactics and strategy. Bunker would bond with Fowler over their mutual love of football. Bunker later attended Super Bowl XXV in Denver alongside Secretary of State Brent Talbot and the Commander of NORAD. Unfortunately, terrorists detonated a faulty nuclear bomb at the stadium, resulting in a partial atomic explosion that killed Bunker, Talbot, and thousands of fans in attendance. This resulted in President Fowler enacting DEFCON-1 and preparing for nuclear war with the Soviet Union who had been blamed for the attack.
