Biography

The Hunt for Red October

After Yuri Andropov suffered a heart attack (some time before December 1984), Narmonov took over his position as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. We learn that he rose to power after working for some time as an engineer and a factory manager.

When the Red October goes missing, Narmonov and the Central Committee call Admiral Yuri Padorin to explain why he chose Marko Ramius to captain the sub, seeing as Ramius is now promising to defect. Padorin reveals that a GRU Agent, Igor Loginov, is onboard the Red October and prepared to scuttle it if neccesary. At first Narmonov is unimpressed by this, especially seeing as Loginov is only 24 years old, but he is eventually convinced that Loginov is reliable for the mission.

The Cardinal of the Kremlin

In 1986, Narmonov was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

The Sum of All Fears

Quotes

  • "Comrade Admiral [...] we have heard from Comrade Gorshkov what the chances are of finding and destroying this rebellious submarine before it can complete its unimaginable crime. We are not pleased. Nor are we pleased with the fantastic error in judgement that gave command of our most valuable ship to this slug. What I want to know from you, Comrade, is what happened to the zampolit aboard, and what security measures were taken by your office to prevent this infamy from taking place!" — Narmonov to Admiral Padorin in the ninth chapter of The Hunt for Red October.
  • "Narmonov, with all his dreams of reducing arms, of loosening the grip of the Party on the life of the nation, of 'liberalizing' what had been bequeathed to the party..." — The Cardinal of the Kremlin, chapter 12.

Trivia
