Charles Alden
Dr. Charles Alden is a character that appears in the novel, The Sum of All Fears. He served as the National Security Advisor under President Robert Fowler until his death.
Biography
Charles Alden worked as a professor of history at Yale before being appointed as the National Security Advisor by President Robert Fowler. A brilliant tactician, he had a good relationship with DDCI Jack Ryan, despite their differing political views. Unfortunately, his tendency to have affairs with former students led to their discovery by Key Advisor Elizabeth Elliot. Seeking Alden's position, she publicly revealed Alden's affair in order to force him to resign. However, the reveal of his affair caused him to suffer a fatal stroke. In the end, Elliot succeeded Alden as Fowler's new National Security Advisor.
