Daniel E. Murray is a character that appears in several Tom Clancy novels. He previously served as the Director of the FBI. Since 2009, Murray has served as the U.S. Attorney General under President Jack Ryan.

In 1981, Murray worked as a Legal attaché for the FBI at the United States Embassy in London.

By 1988, Murray was the Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI.

Film

In the film, Murray was the Deputy Assistant director of the FBI. Following the death of Peter Hardin who had laundered and later stole $650 million from Medellín Cartel leader Ernesto Escobedo, U.S. President James Bennett sent FBI Director Emile Jacobs to meet Jack Ryan in Colombia to negotiate with the Colombian Attorney General to claim the money. Escobedo's intelligence officer, Félix Cortez learned of this meeting after seducing Jacob's assistant Moira Wolfson. He then arranged for Jacob's entourage to be ambushed. Dan Murray, who was among the entourage, was killed in the ambush. Ryan was the sole survivor of the ambush.

Debt of Honor

Murray still worked as the Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI in 1995. Murray served as the lead investigator in the sexual misconduct case against Vice President Edward Kealty. Kealty later resigned from office after the criminal case against him was publicly revealed.

Executive Orders

In 1996, Murray had become the Acting Director of the FBI.

Rainbow Six

A few months later, John Clark, Alistair Stanley, Domingo Chavez, and their families were traveling on a United Airlines flight to the new Rainbow headquarters at Hereford Base, England. During the flight, several men attempted to hijack the plane but were quickly stopped by Clark, Stanley, and Chavez. Afterwards, Clark contacted Murray over the cockpit radio to brief him of the situation.

A few weeks later, Murray and his wife Liz attended a committee meeting led by John Brightling. During Brightling's speech, Murray was called by FBI agent Gorden Sinclair from the Watch Center. Sinclair briefed Murray of Rainbow's successful handling of a hostage situation in Bern Switzerland that was led by German terrorist Ernst Model. Sinclair also told Murray that they were working on identifying two of the terrorists that were killed. Murray was relieved of Rainbow's first successful deployment and told Sinclair to have Rainbow send a report of the incident before he rejoined his wife at the conference.
