In 1999, Hans Fürchtner and Petra Dortmund led a group of terrorists into the home and took Ostermann's staff, including Dengler, hostage. Unbeknownst to the terrorists, Dengler had activated an alarm button under his desk and notified the alarm company of the situation via duress word. This led to the police responding to the situation and Rainbow's notification.

The terrorists directed Dengler to lead them to Ostermann's office at gun point. Afterwards, they informed Ostermann that he would be joining them on a trip out of the country so that he could give them "special access codes" to the international trade markets. Petra Dortmund emphasized that they were serious by pointing her pistol at Dengler's head and stating that they would kill him and all the other staff members unless Ostermann cooperated. Ostermann was astonished by these demands as these codes did not exist. After Police Captain Wilhelm Altmark made contact with the terrorists, they had decided amongst themselves that Dengler would be one of the hostages that they would kill on their way to the airport with Ostermann. While waiting for the police to meet their demands, Fürchtner and Dortmund funneled all of the remaining hostages into Ostermann's office.

A few minutes before midnight, the police sent a helicopter crew in to the building to pilot Ostermann's helicopter for the terrorist's getaway. Petra Dortmund thought it may be a tactical error to kill Dengler now as he may have the same information about the "special access codes" as Osterman. Dengler was taken to the helicopter along with Ostermann and another staff member. Dortmund had Dengler go in the helicopter first so that he could be a shield in case they receive any incoming fire. Luckily, the helicopter co-pilot was disguised Rainbow Operator Eddie Price. Dengler had noticed Price was out of place compared to pilot and quickly looked away so as to not give Price away. After the remaining terrorists had left the building to join Fürchtner and Dortmund, Team 2 commander Domingo Chavez gave the signal to engage and eliminate the terrorists. Homer Johnston shot and killed Petra Dortmund, resulting in her blood splattering over Dengler's face. Price then turned around and shot Hans Fürchtner in the head, killing him instantly. With the hostage's safe, Johnston poured his canteen over Dengler's face to wash off the blood.
