Biography

Erwin Guttenach is a former member of the Red Army Faction. He became known for kidnapping, murder, and bank robbery. In 1986, he took a BMW board member hostage and demanded $4M D-marks. After receiving the money, Guttenach killed the board member and escaped with the money.

Guttenach later joined Ernst Model's crew in the early 1990s. In 1999, Dimitriy Popov contacted Model and paid him $600K in D-marks to take hostages at a commercial bank Bern, Switzerland. Model and his crew accomplished this under the guise of a botched bank robbery. Not long after the start of their negotiations with police, however, Model made the fatal mistake of killing a hostage so early in negotiations. He then had another hostage, Hans Richter, carry the body out of the building for display before being escorted to safety. This proved to be their downfall as it not only complicated attempts to negotiate their escape but it prompted the Swiss Government to give Rainbow approval to rescue the hostages. Additionally, Richter was able to identify Model and Guttenach from old photos.

Model continued to negotiate with police and eventually threatened to kill a hostage every thirty minutes unless his crew was given a car to a helicopter a few blocks away, and from there to the airport. Once the deadline had elapsed, Model grabbed a hostage named Mario Donatello and prepared to execute him. Before he could do this, Team 2 breached the facility and eliminated the terrorists. Guttenach was killed by Domingo Chavez with a shot to the head.

It is later revealed that Model and his crew were pawns in the Horizon Corporation's plan to increase terrorism awareness in order for Bill Hendrickson to secure a contract for Global Security to provide security at the Sydney Summer Games.
