José is a character that appears in the Rainbow Six novel. He was a terrorist involved in a plot to get Carlos The Jackal released from prison by taking children hostage at World Park in Spain.

Biography

José was a member of Action Directe until its dissolution by the French police in 1987. In 1999, Carlos The Jackal had his lawyer notify José and other former members of Action Directe of his desire to be released from prison. Led by René, José and his associates traveled to World Park to enact a plan that would result in Carlos' freedom. After checking into one of the park's surrounding hotels, José was put on standby for the next two weeks as Andre and Esteban gathered information about the park by applying for jobs as a park security guard and a balloon seller.

Two weeks later on April 2nd, José and his associates disguised themselves as tourists and launched their attack. Taking the children of Thompson CSF employees hostage, José and the other terrorists corralled them into the park's replica medieval castle which also housed its control room. It was their hope that Thompson CSFs importance to the French Government would force them to release Carlos and several other comrades from prison. To show their resolve, René ordered Andre to execute a terminally ill girl named Anna Groot.

Following the arrival of Daniel Malloy's Night Hawk, René posted José on the roof of the castle to keep watch and proceeded to check in with him every fifteen minutes. Rainbow sniper Homer Johnston noted José's position on the roof and notified John Clark. With their options limited, Tim Noonan devised a plan to plant a small surveillance camera. Daniel Malloy changed the flying pattern of his Night Hawk in order to distract José while Noonan and Julio Vega installed the device.

A few hours later, René stated that they would kill a hostage every hour starting at 2200 unless their demands were met, prompting Clark to initiate the rescue operation. Team 2 boarded the Malloy's Night Hawk helicopter and flew towards the castle while Team 1 readied to enter the building from the underground tunnels. Once Team 2 was in place over the castle, Johnston shot and killed José. This allowed Team 2 to safely rappel from the helicopter and start their breach of the command room from the windows. A short firefight broke out, resulting in the deaths of the eight terrorists remaining in the castle and the successful rescue of the hostages.
