Biography

In 1999, Murphy was among a group of PIRA members led by Sean Grady. During this time, Murphy and the other PIRA members hid from authorities in Ireland, constantly moving from different safe houses and conducting operations covertly. The group was later contacted and met by an old acquaintance of Grady, Dimitriy Popov who informed them of a new new counterterrorist group named Rainbow and that they had been responsible for resolving the recent terrorist incident at Bern, Vienna, and World Park.

Popov proposed that PIRA take the wife and daughter of John Clark, Rainbow's Director, hostage from the community hospital they worked at in order to lure Rainbow out to be disposed of. Grady agreed to the operation in exchange for six million dollars and a large quantity of cocaine to further fund PIRA operations. The group then spent the next two weeks planning the operation by scouting the area around the hospital and Hereford Base. Grady determined they would break into two groups with one entering the hospital to take Sandra O'Toole and Patricia Clark hostage while the other would remain outside to provide support and launch a surprise attack on Rainbow and the other responding authorities. Grady stated that everyone would use cell phones to communicate with one another. With the money from Popov, they purchased large Volvo commercial trucks with canvas covers and transported them to the area just outside Hereford Base.

The next day, Murphy was placed in the outside group to launch the surprise attack on Rainbow. After the first group led by Timothy O'Neal took Clark's daughter and wife hostage, Murphy's group waited inside the trucks for Rainbow's forces to arrive. As expected, Rainbow immediately responded to the scene by sending Team-1, led by Peter Covington, who positioned themselves near the PIRA trucks. However, as a result of cell service being jammed by Rainbow's Tim Noonan, Grady was unable to communicate with his men to further coordinate the attack. Despite this, Grady told Murphy and the other PIRA members with him that they would start their surprise attack in the next few minutes. Grady then headed back to his rental car nearby and was the first to fire at Rainbow, followed by the other PIRA members. This resulted in serious injuries to three members of Rainbow including Alistair Stanley and Mike Chin and as well the death of two other operatives. After witnessing the death of Roddy Sands, Grady signaled for Murphy and the other men outside to escape by getting back in his rental car and flooring it. Murphy was the designated driver and followed Grady as they attempted to escape. Unfortunately for Murphy, they were pursued by Clark and Domingo Chavez through their driver, Mole.

During the chase, Mole maneuvered their vehicle to Murphy's left then slowed and darted to his right. This surprised Murphy and gave Clark enough time to signal for Mole to swerve their vehicle to the left. Murphy swerved to the left to avoid Mole which granted an opening for Clark and Chavez to extend their pistols out the car windows and take out Murphy's tires. Murphy attempted to gain control of the vehicle but the truck's wheel rim dug into the pavement and caused it to roll over into the guard rail. Murphy was killed almost instantly as he was crushed between the large wheel and the back of his seat. Only one other PIRA member survived the crashed though he was seriously injured and unconscious. This member was soon taken to the hospital at Hereford base along with Sean Grady who had also been captured.
