Roger Durling is the former President of the United States who served from 1991 until his death in 1996 where he was succeeded by his Vice President, Jack Ryan. Durling appears and is mentioned in several Tom Clancy novels.
Biography
From 1989 to 1991, Durling served as the Vice President of the United States under President Robert Fowler. Durling later succeeded him as President following Fowler's resignation. President Durling names Edward Kealty as his Vice President. Durling went on to be reelected in 1992. In 1996, Kealty resigned as Vice President after it was publicly revealed that he was under FBI investigation for sexual misconduct. This prompted Durling to nominate his National Security Advisor Jack Ryan as the new Vice President and his running mate in the 1996 Presidential Election.
However, an embittered Japan Air Lines pilot flew his Boeing 747 directly into the U.S. Capitol during a special joint session of Congress. Durling, Congress, the Supreme Court, and many other members of the federal government are killed in the attack. Ryan managed to escape the explosion and is sworn in as Durling's successor before a district judge in the Washington CNN Studios.
