In 1970, Painter was a Squadron Commander flying F-4 Phantom II’s off the flight deck of USS Constellation in support of Operation Boxwood Green.
The Hunt for Red October
By 1984, he had been promoted to a Rear Admiral (Lower Half) and was the Commander of the Enterprise Carrier Battle Group.
Clear and Present Danger
Four years later in 1988, Painter had become a Vice Admiral and was the Chief of Naval Aviation.
The Sum of All Fears
In 1991, he been promoted to Admiral and was the Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Fleet.
